Gaganjeet Bhullar eyes the number one spot in the Asian Tour Order of Merit
India’s emerging golf star, Gaganjeet Bhullar won the fourth Asian Tour title of his career last week at the Venetian Macau Open and marked the second victory of the season.
Earlier in September, he outshined his opponents on the field to take home the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship title.
With two victories in hand this season, the 24-year-old now wants to end the year as the best golfer on the Asian Tour.
With eight tournaments left on the roster, it is quite possible that the Indian will capitalise on his recent form to surge to the top of the Asian Tour Order of Merit.
He currently lists fifth in the standings with $342,712.81 earnings this season, against the leader Marcus Fraser’s $481,394.61.
Bhullar has no doubt emerged as one of the best players from India and is following the footsteps of the six-time Asian Tour winner Jeev Milkha Singh.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he admitted that he idolizes Singh and wants to repeat the same as what his idol did in the past. Singh won the Order of Merit twice during his career, in 2006 and 2008.
“Jeev has set targets for us. I would say we need to work really hard. The two wins, multiple category right now, winning the Order of Merit would be nice,” said Bhullar.
“There’re a lot of big weeks coming up. Singapore, Hong Kong, Johor and the Indian Open, Obviously, it’s not that far (from his position on the Order of Merit) and a few good weeks can jump my ranking to number one,” added Bhullar
Bhullar said that the time is not far away when he will surpass Singh’s mark of six-victories on the Asian Tour.
He also expressed his wish of reaching the echelons of great players around the world. He told that he played amateur golf with Rory McIlroy and now finds himself far behind the current world number one player.
According to the golf commentators, Bhullar still has plenty of work to do if he wants to create history by making it to the top ranks in the Official World Golf Rankings.
