Gaganjeet Bhullar struggles at the World Golf Championships – HSBC Champions
Indian young star Gaganjeet Bhullar faltered in the opening round of the World Golf Championships – HSBC Champions and tied for the 46th position, on Thursday, November 1, 2012.
The last of the four WGCs is being played at the prestigious Mission Hills Golf Club’s Olazabal Course.
The tournament is featuring a mixture of players from different continents, as it is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour, European Tour and the Asian Tour.
Bhullar, who won the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship and Venetian Macau Open earlier this season, struggled with his putter throughout the day.
After making a decent start – he birdied two of the first seven holes – he started wasting birdie opportunities.
His game off the tee was brilliant and he was solid with his iron-play. However, he struggled badly with his short game.
After conceding bogeys on the eighth and the tenth hole, he was equal par for the round. He then tried to make a comeback by recording a birdie on the 11th hole, but lost another shot on the very next hole that he played.
On the 16th hole, he lost another shot and finished his round eight strokes behind the co-leaders, Louis Oosthuizen and Adam Scott.
Talking to the reporter after completing his round, he stated that he misjudged the lines and landed his ball on the wrong sides of the holes. That was the major reason behind his poor performance in Shenzhen, China.
“I struggled a bit with my putting. Maybe I wasn’t comfortable reading the lines. I struck the ball good, hit all fairways,” said Bhullar, who finished tied 10th in the co-sanctioned Asian Tour and PGA Tour event in Malaysia last week.
He added, “I guess today was my first official round on the golf course. At least I have seen where to place the ball and hopefully tomorrow will be better. On the greens here, you can’t miss on the wrong side of the hole and I struggled with that. Tomorrow,
I’ll need to work on that”.
Jeev Milkha Singh was another Indian star who struggled with his game on the greens. He recorded only two birdies against the same number of bogeys to finish tied for the 34th position.
