Gaganjeet Bhullar wins again by taking home the Venetian Macau Open title
The Indian golf star, Gaganjeet Bhullar won the Venetian Macau Open – his second victory of the 2012 Asian Tour season – after carding an impressive three-under par 68 in the final round at the Macau Golf & Country Club, on October 14, 2012.
The victory also earned him US$118,875 prize money, which moved him to the fifth spot in the Asian Tour Order of Merit.
Bhullar, who won the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship in Taipei last month, was listed among the hot favourites for a win this week.
At the end of the tournament, he proved his betting odds right by outshining his nearest rival, Jonathan Moore, with a two-stroke margin.
The 24-year-old finished his front nine with a four-under par score to open up a three-stroke lead over his competitors in the field.
However, bogeys on the 10th and the 13th hole created chances for his rivals to reach the top. Meanwhile, Moore tried to apply pressure on Bhullar by finishing his campaign with a run of five straight birdies.
However, it did not matter much to the Indian, as he responded by another birdie on the 18th hole to finish the tournament with a 16-under par overall score.
“The whole week, I just struck the ball really well. Mentally, I was focused and I was in the zone. I knew I would win it easily,” he said.
Bhullar also became the first Indian player in the history of the Venetian Macau Open to win the title. The tournament was also sponsored by The Venetian Macau-Resort-Hotel for the first time ever.
“This is going to take a long time to sink in. I hit the ball so good. I was just in the perfect zone. More than that, it was self-belief,” he said.
He added, “This is my first wire-to-wire Asian Tour title. I think it was more that I had to prove to myself that I’m a good front runner. I had to believe in myself. I did it and it was really special”.
Moore, in the meantime, was happy with his overall performance in the tournament. The second-place finish allowed him to pocket US$81,375 prize money, which also secured him the full-time playing status for the 2013 Asian Tour season.
