I know i ask a lot of stupid questions but

I've been doing jujitsu for about a month and a half now. Coarse everybody is going to say your doin good. They don't want me to quit or feel bad. So how do I know if I'm doing good besides asking people. Or how good were you after about a month and a half

  1. well a month and a half isn't really enough time to tell. one of the best ways to tell how much improvement you have had is to grapple with some one who is newer or has not grappled before at all. its happened to me like this. I just kept getting beat no matter what I learned or tried every one had the answer. it took longer to submit me or I might have escaped once in a while. then a new guy came down and they let me work with the other beginner and he got tapped a lot by me that first day. just work hard and get your @ss kicked and one day it will be your turn

  2. The only way to realistically gauge your level in BJJ is to enter a competition and see how you do against others of your weight and experience level. Other than that, the best person to ask is your instructor, as its their job to assess your level (as they will be the ones giving you your next rank).

I would not advise judging your skill level by tapping people in class: the environment there is very different from a competition (e.g., people in class may be taking it easy, coming back from an injury, working a specific technique etc). Competition guarantees your opponent will be trying their hardest to prevent you applying technique, which is not always the case in class.

Indeed, I'd find it detrimental to approach training with a 'win/lose' mentality outside of competition:  far better to focus on improving technique. If you get tapped along the way, or tap someone else, doesn't matter.

After a month and a half, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Focus on the basics, work specific techniques (especially escapes), and try to relax.

Hope that helps: good luck with your training!

  3. I have been doing No gi bjj for about 2 months now. In the first month, I rolled with this guy (ill call him albert) I lasted like 40 seconds! And tonight, I rolled with him for like 10 minutes! He still won, but my defense is improving greatly. He still won, but 10 min! I just kind of knew i was improving. You should too. If you are lasting a bit longer, maintaining positions longer, thats great!

  4. it wasnt until my 6th month that i felt good about my skill , my favs are the leg lock . if i had a mma nick name i would call my self the " leg lochness monster"......roflmao
