Gail Emms wants schools to inspire more girls to participate in different sports – Badminton News
England’s former Women’s and Mixed Doubles shuttler, Gail Emms, wants schools to inspire more and more girls to participate in different sports along with Badminton.
Emms, who won silver medal in the 2004 Olympic Games, is currently working as the Youth Sport Trust Ambassador and visited Sedgefield Community College, on Tuesday, May 17.
Emms is currently supporting the Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week, which will start from June 27, in which all pupils will be given chance to participate in the sports of their own choice. She is hopeful that these kinds of events will introduce many
players who will be able to participate in Olympics and Paralympics.
Emms said, “Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week is about all pupils taking part in Olympic and Paralympic sports, trying new sports and achieving their personal best.”
While talking about the role that schools are playing for the development of sports, Emms added, “Schools have made such amazing improvements in the quality and quantity of sport they deliver for pupils in recent years and they should be immensely proud
of this.”
She appreciated the performances of schools in introducing potential players who perform at the international level and bring glory to their country.
The English shuttler added, “I would like to see schools being really creative about how they engage girls, to show them how exciting and fun sport can be.”
Emms, who has retired from professional badminton, found 70 pupils who want to join the training programmes of different games at school level and lead the country afterwards. The main purpose of the Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week will be to entice
more people, particularly girls, to play different sports.
The event organiser of Sedgefield, Sarah Price, expressed her views and said, “We have had some tremendous success in recent years in engaging more girls in sport in Durham.”
Emms is very optimistic that the efforts of schools regarding the involvement of girls in the sports are very encouraging. She further expressed that if things proceed in the same way, the girls will also play a major role in all sports.
