Why was it needed druing to building of panama canel???

I am not quite sure if I understand your question.  THe guillard cut was a piece of land that was very challenging to create.  As you know the Canal was man made, and when they were constructing it they came across this piece of land very difficult to cut through.  They had to find a way to open that land and they did, after many attempts with dinamite and all that stuff.  Now days Is the most challenging part of the canal specially for the navigators.  It curves and at the same time it thins so they have to be careful...How does it help or why was it needed, I dont think there is an answer to your question.

    Nicole E.'s answers is a good one, however this cut isn't too dangerous anymore because it has been dragged to reduce the curves.

    By the way, this cut is currently called as "Corte Culebra" (Snake's Cut), and it tsn't Gaillard Cut anymore
