Gaining Chinese Accent?

I'm learning Mandarin and I'm a bit perplexed with the accent (not the tones)

How can I gain an authentic one?

Why is "yidian" sometimes written with "r" at the end?

I think the best way to gain the accent is to spend time with Mandarin speakers, so that you're immersed in it. Give it a few months and you'll see a big improvement.

The yidian/r thing is regional - generally they say yidianr (or beibianr etc) in the North, and yidian in the South and Taiwan.
