Help me! I feel so fat! I don't feel like going out anywhere because I don't want people to see me. I'm 19, weigh 135lbs, 5'7".

My normal weekday routine is:

7:30am: Coffee with 1 c. 2% milk and a tb. of honey

9:30am: Pilates (1hr x3 days)

10:30am: 1 apple

12:30pm: Step aerobics (1hr x 3 days)

2:00pm: 1 c. cantaloupe and 2 c. tea

3-7pm: I work a stocking job

Dinner is usually a few bites of whatever is laying around, last night it was 1/4 of a bagel, a cup of soymilk, and 1/4 c. plain yogurt.

And I drink about 2 liters of water throughout the day.

Anyway, I'm gaining weight. Why? It's not muscle weight, I have new love handles!! I'm so disguisted with myself and I'm frustrated!

I'm adding a 1hr x 3 a week spinning class to my week.... but I'm just so tired of getting on the scale and being heavier every time and everyone I know eats way more than me....

Why am I gaining?

  1. Eat More

    Your Body's In Starvation Mode

Also You Sound like you have a budding eating disoder

get it checket out with a GP

  2. your starving yourself fat thats why, eat more

  3. You're gaining weight because you ARE NOT getting enough calories.  When you starve yourself, your body gets scared and starts to hold every single calorie you intake.  It doesn't want to let it go because it needs calories for energy.  Also - you're probably more upset than you should be because lack of food can cause a slight depression.  You're doing more harm to your body by not eating enough.  Eat more before you make yourself sick.

  4. Your eating too little.  Your body is in starvation mode, so its turning more of what you eat into fat to use as a reserve of calories.  You should be eating more like 1,200 calories per day.

  5. When you don't eat enough nutritious food(Lean meat Tuna,Vegetables,Dairy Products), your body goes into starvation mode and desperately tries to hold onto anything you do feed it. If you are an active person, you need to eat enough healthy food to provide your body the fuel it needs. You should try eating a variety of healthy foods in moderate portions throughout the day.

  6. You will gain weight initially when you are not eating enough, and you are not eating enough.  You should never go lower than 1200 calories a day, even when on a "diet".  At 135 pounds, without doing any exercise at all, you need about 1700 or 1800 calories to maintain your weight.  Add in all the exercise you are getting, and you probably need something like 2500 or more to maintain your weight.  So what is happening is that your brain thinks you are starving and your body has gone into conserving and retaining every calorie for protection.  Your metabolism is slowing down, which you really do not want.

Here are a few common sense things you can do which really will work if you give them a chance, even though there isn't much common sense around when it comes to weight loss.

Eat at least 1500 to 1800 calories a day with the amount of exercise you are doing now, and add a little more exercise.

Keeping a food journal really does help.  It will give you a much better sense of how much you are eating, and when, and why.

Make a few small changes - walk everywhere, always use stairs instead of elevators, walk on escalators, get up and move around at least once an hour if your work or your life in general is sedentary, walk every day, use a pedometer. Walking 10,000 steps a day is a really good idea. Build up to a long brisk walk everyday, or most days.  Be more active and watch less TV and spend less time on the computer.

Start a weight lifting routine. It will help increase your metabolism and make you feel and look better in so many ways. Join a gym. Possibly you can find one that has someone who specializes in weight lifting programs for beginners. Weight lifting will increase your metabolism as well as improve posture and appearance overall.

In terms of diet, cut out or reduce things like junk food, pop, fat, fast food. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish.   Particularly if you choose a vegetarian lifestyle include natural peanut butter, hummus, dried fruit and nuts.  Pay close attention to getting the nutrients your body needs to be healthy.  Drink plenty of water, at least 8 big glasses a day, and more if it is very hot, it you sweat a lot, or if you are exercising intensely. You will begin to see changes in your body.
