Gaj The Legend sprints to legendary finish at Sheffield
The Sheffield Greyhound Stadium in Sheffield is a place where legends are born. Each race gives the dogs a chance to race to a big finish that will etch their names in the annals of history.
The early races held at the track on Thursday saw some legendary results from some of top contenders in greyhound racing.
The day began with a 280m D3 race, which saw the aptly-named Gaj The Legend (3-1) sprint to a first-place finish. He led halfway and finished in fine form with a time of 16.73 seconds.
Ballymac Oliver, a member of the storied Ballymac pedigree, was the 9-4 favourite in this race. He bumped first, but quickly recovered to take second place in 16.91. He was 2¼ lengths behind the winner.
Rounding out the top three was Ashtree Blue (4-1). He crowded first, but finished well to place third. His finishing time of 17.01 placed him 1¼ lengths behind Ballymac Oliver. Air Patrol
(4-1) failed to stick the landing today, missing out on a top-three result by a neck’s length with his time of 17.03.
Fifth place went to 11-4 long shot Shoestring Paige. She bumped first and second, but couldn’t recover in time. She went on to finish in 17.13, 1¼ lengths out of fourth place. Crowding
first led Utah Saint (6-1) to a last-place finish in 17.25. She was 1½ lengths behind Shoestring Paige.
The 500m A6 race that followed saw Maze (4-1) leave the competition with nowhere to turn. Maze held an early pace from trap five, and led second on the way to a 30.77 second finish that
gave her the top position in this race. Edenberry Joe (7-2) ran on to complete the race in 30.83. He missed out on a win by just ¾ lengths. Bumping first and third didn’t deter 10-1 long shot Rhincrew Fergie, who ran to a surprise third-place finish. Her
time of 30.91 was a single length behind second place.
Claiming fourth place was Dentons Pride (5-2), who led to second, but eventually fell behind. She went on to finish the race in 31.05, 1¾ lengths behind Rhincrew Fergie. Rockchasedicanio,
the 7-4 favourite, lacked an early pace from trap three, and disappointed many by finishing in fifth place with a time of 31.29. A distance of three lengths separated him from a fourth-place finish. Vatpack Sammy (5-1) bumped first and third, which resulted
in a sixth-place finish in 31.39 that was 1¼ lengths out of fifth place.
Gaj The Legend ran a great race today, and hopes to extend his winning streak when the races at Sheffield Greyhound Stadium resume on Thursday evening. The action begins with an A4 race
at 18:38.
