Gajdosova/ Goerges down Lino/Pous-Tio to move into the semis – NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies 2011
The Australian German duo of Jarmila Gajdosova and Julia Goerges dumped Spaniards, Lourdes Dominguez Lino and Laura Pous-Tio in straight sets at NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies, a clay court tournament held in Bad Gastein, Austria. They
registered a 6-3, 6-3 victory over their rivals to advance into the semi-finals on Thursday.
Gajdosova and Goerges put up solid display of tennis to down the Spaniards in under an hour and to secure a last four spot in the double event of this WTA tournament.
The Australian – German pair high spiritedly entered the opening set and plucked in entire serve by quick forehands and backhands from their arsenal of skills. They only required a single breakpoint opportunity which they duly
earned in the eighth game. The pair converted it to their advantage to clinch the opener with an assuring 6-3 score line.
To spice the set further, the raging duo smacked three aces and clobbered an amazing first serve share of 85 percent as compared to Lino and Pous-Tio’s 60 percent. They also registered a magnificent 86 percent win on it and faced
zero breakpoint.
Gajdosova and Goerges carried their winning ways into the final set as they got the first blood in the very first game and took the lead. Although they lost their serve in the proceeding game, the Australian German team broke their
opponents serve in the fifth and ninth game to eventually bag the set with a 6-3 score line again.
They displayed nerves of steel to produce a higher first serve share again and earned a tremendous 80 percent win on it. The winning pair failed to fend off the only breakpoint faced but converted three out of seven breakpoint
opportunities to their advantage.
Up next for the fired-up tandem are the local wild card enterers, Nikola Hofmanova and Melanie Klaffner who won a walkover victory over the third seeded Spaniards, Nuria Llagostera Vives and Arantxa Parra Santonja.
The Czechs, Eva Birnerova and Lucie Hradecka, will be joining the Australian German team in the last four. They upset fourth seeded Austrians, Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolska after making an epic comeback from a set down to win
by a 5-7, 7-5, 10-8 score line.
Birnerova and Hradecka produced a similar first serve share of 62 percent and saved eight out of thirteen breakpoints faced. Although they committed nine double faults, the Czechs capitalised on five out of eleven breakpoint opportunities
to their advantage. They eventually edged past their opponents in the third set or the super tie-breaker and secured a semi-final spot.
