Gajdosova/ Goerges stun Grandin/ Uhlirova in first round – NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies 2011
The Australian German duo of Jarmila Gajdosova and Julia Goerges upset top seeds, South Africa’s Natalie Grandin and Czech Vladimira Uhlirova, to advance into the second round of the NURNBERGER Gastein Ladies 2011 doubles event.
They bounced from a set down to overpower their rivals with a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 score lie on Wednesday.
The unseeded tandem of Gajdosova and Goerges took one and half hour to triumph over the highest ranked pair on the clay courts in Bad Gastein, Austria. Both pairs broke each other serve once in a single set and took the match to
a third set tie-breaker. The Australian German team dominated in the decider to secure a second round spot in this event.
Both teams put up a solid display of tennis in the opening set. They bagged in their entire serves until Grandin and Uhlirova held at 5-4. The highest ranked seeds required a single breakpoint to win the set and which they duly
earned in the tenth game to seal the set with a 6-4 win. The South African Czech pair clobbered a higher first serve share of 62 percent as compared to their opponents’ 50 percent and registered a spectacular 81 percent win on it.
The Australian German pair perfected their co-ordination in the second set and after capitalising on the single breakpoint opportunity to their advantage in the eleventh game, they sealed the equaliser with a 7-5 win by keeping
their serve in the last game. Gajdosova and Georges saved all three breakpoints faced with their amazing defensive skills and registered a fabulous 81 percent win on their similar first serve share of 60 percent. They also smacked four ferocious aces to put
the cherry on the set and advanced confidently into the next set or the super tie-breaker.
In the deciding tie-breaker, the Australian German duo clobbered a magnificent first serve share of 63 percent as opposed to seeds’ 0 percent and earned a perfect win on it. They eventually sealed it with an assuring 10-5 score
line after dominating all over the court.
Up next for Gajdosova and Goerges in the Spanish tandem of Lourdes Dominguez Lino and Laura Pous Tio who trashed Ukrainians Alona and Kateryna Bondarenko in straight sets to set-up this clash.
The Spaniards saved seven out of eleven breakpoints faced and cashed in on all seven breakpoint chances to her advantage to seal the match with a 6-4, 6-3 score line in one hour and thirteen minutes on Tuesday. Although they produced
a lower first serve share, Lino and Tio earned a plausible 51 percent win on it.
