Gajdosova/ Kerber eclipse Fujiwara/ Morita in quarterfinal – HP Japan Open 2011
Austrian Jarmila Gajdosova with German Angelique Kerber whipped the Japanese duo of Rika Fujiwara with Ayumi Morita in the quarterfinal of the HP Japan Open 2011. On Thursday the 13th of October the squads battled swords
on the hard courts of Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka, Japan. After simply one hour and twenty three minutes the Austrian/ German couple eclipsed the Japanese duo by bouncing back from a set down 2-6, 7-5, 11-9.
Fujiwara/ Morita initiated the first round of the match and they got off to a marvellous start as they reeled off three straight games against Gajdosova/ Kerber by capitalizing on two early breaks. Thus, by the end of the first
three games the scoreboard had spun to a 3-0 mini lead for the Japanese couple.
In the fourth game Fujiwara/ Morita double faulted on their serve and endorsed a game to their adversaries. They two squads kept breaking each other back-to-back for the following three games and the scoreboard rotated to 5-2 with
the Japanese pair leading the score. During the last game Fujiwara/ Morita held serve and bagged the opening set with a 6-2 victory.
After taking a thrashing in the initial set, the Austrian/ German pulled up their socks and opted to initiate the second set. Both the crews were successful in handling their first service games and tied the scoreboard at 1-1.
The scoreboard again tied at 3-3 with both the squads breaking each other and then holding serves.
In the seventh and the eighth game Fujiwara/ Morita broke their adversaries and then held serve to take mini lead of 3-5. The Japanese couple saw an ephemeral mini lead as Gajdosova/ Kerber equalized the score at 5-5 with a hold
of serve and then by capitalizing on a breakpoint.
During the eleventh game Kerber/ Gajdosova skilfully held serve and were now only a game away at 6-5. As the Japanese pair came under pressure their forehand shot went wayward and they endorsed the set point to their German/ Austrian
opponents.
By the end of the first two sets each team had scored a set each and opening the super tiebreaker was Gajdosova/ Kerber. However, they got off to a bad start and were unable to hold a point for the first four points, while the
Japanese pair was leading with a 4-0 lead. It was in the fifth game that Gajdosova/ Kerber made a return and with a series of breaks and hold they captured the tiebreaker at 11-9.
After bagging the super tiebreaker, Gajdosova and Kerber were able to secure a spot in the semi-final of the HP Japan Open 2011.
