Galatasaray Medical Park, Unics and Barcelona win – Euroleague Group D 4th week Review – Part 1
During the fourth week of the Turkish Airlines Euro league, three games took place in Group D. Here is a brief review of the games:
Galatasaray Medical Park 79 - Union Olimpija 70
Galatasaray Medical Park improved 2-2 in Group D with a 79-70 victory over Union Olimpija on November 09, 2011 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Olimpija meanwhile dropped to 1-3.
Galatasaray’s Furkan Aldemir recorded a double-double in his first-ever Euro league start, scoring a game-high 18 points on 7 for 9 shooting from two-point range and grabbing 11 rebounds. Josh Shipp came off the bench with 17 points
and two steals while Preston Shumpert had 11 points and four rebounds for Galatasaray. Darius Songaila also totalled 10 points in the victory.
Aleksandar Capin tallied a team-high 15 points on a brilliant 5 for 6 shooting from downtown and stole the ball three times. Ratko Varda posted 14 points and Deon Thompson finished with 11 points and four rebounds in the loss.
Medical Park shot 66.6 percent (24 for 36) from two-point range and limited the hosts to just 54.5 percent (18 for 33). Additionally, Galatasaray grabbed 31 rebounds as compared to just 24 by Olimpija.
Medical Park made a blistering start and raced onto a 9-0 lead, taking it to 14-4, with six minutes remaining in the first quarter. Olimpija however struck back and reduced their deficit to just three, 23-20. Medical Park responded
with four unanswered points in the closing minute of the quarter to push their lead to 27-20 before Sasu Salin nailed a three-pointer to trim the margin to four, 27-23, after 10 minutes.
Galatasaray scored the first seven points of the second period to push their lead back to double figures, 35-23.  They maintained the hold for rest of the quarter and held a 44-37 lead at halftime.
Olimpija quickly turned things around in the third quarter and made it a one-point contest, 44-43, early. Darius Songaila then canned six straight points and Joshua Shipp followed him with a dunk to make it 52-43 for Medical Park.
Olimpija however closed the first half on a 13-5 run, cutting their deficit to just one after 3 minutes of action.
With six minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Danny Green hit a pair of free throws to make it a point contest, 64-63. Medical Park however again broke away and reeled off an 11-0 run for a 75-63 lead and did not trail for rest
of the game.
Unics 72 - Asseco Prokom 68
Unics recorded their second consecutive victory of the season, defeating Asseco Prokom 72-68 at the Gdynia Sports Arena. Unics moved up to 2-2 and will at least tie for third place at the end of this round while Prokom dropped
to 0-4 – the only winless team of this season.
