Galatasaray Medical Park and Bennet Cantu win: Euroleague Basketball Roundup November 09
Five games took place in the 2011-12 Turkish Airlines Euroleague on Wednesday, November 09. Here is a brief review of the games:
Galatasaray Medical Park 79 - Union Olimpija 70
Galatasaray Medical Park reeled off a 13-7 in the dying minutes of the game, turning it on its head to secure a 79-70 win over Union Olimpija. In doing so, they moved up to 2-2 in Group D. Olimpija on the other hand dropped to
1-3 in the group.
Furkan Aldemir recorded a double-double in his first-ever Euroleague start with a game-best 18 points on 7 for 9 shooting from two-point range and 11 rebounds. Josh Shipp had 17 points and two steals in the victory. Preston Shumpert
contributed 11 points and pulled down four rebounds while Darius Songaila added 10 points for Galatasaray.
Aleksandar Capin led Olimpija with 15 points, three steals and three assists while Ratko Varda ended with 14 points. Deon Thompson added 11 points and four rebounds in Olimpija’s third loss of this season.
Galatasaray opened the game on a 9-0 run and held a 27-23 lead after the first quarter. The visiting team pushed their lead to double-digits, 34-23, early in the second quarter but Olimpija went on a 5-0 run in the closing minute
of the first half and trimmed their deficit to seven, 44-37 at halftime.
The hosts made a terrific comeback in the third period, outscoring Medical Park 19-13 and made it a one-point contest with ten minutes to go. Galatasaray widened their lead to 63-59 early in the fourth quarter before Olimpija pulled
within one, 64-63. Medical Park then went on a 13-7 run in the last six minutes of the game to seal the victory.
Bennet Cantu 64 – Olympiacos 63
At Pala Desio, Giorgi Shermadini hit a game-winning free throw with 7.8 seconds to go as Bennet Cantu improved to 3-1 in Group A with a one point-victory, 64-63, over Olympiacos. It was third consecutive home victory for Cantu
while it was second straight loss for Olympiacos, which have dropped to 3-1.
Maarten Leunen headed Bennet 12 points and six rebounds while veteran Denis Marconato totalled points, six assists and three blocks.
Olympiacos’ guard Vassilis Spanoulis topped all scorers with 23 points on a perfect 9 for 9 shooting from free throw line while Marko Keselj ended with 11 points and four rebounds in the losing effort.
Cantu dished out 19 assists while the visiting team had just eight assists.
Olympiacos played a better offensive game early in the game and held a 16-12 lead after 10 minutes. Although both teams were close in the second and third quarter but Olympiacos hung on to a four-point lead, 49-45, after three.
Cantu upped the ante late in the fourth and tied the game at 61. After both sides exchanged consecutive baskets, Shermadini responded with a free throw to make it 64-63 for Cantu. With few second remaining, Kyle Hines missed a
shot from two-point range that could have given his team the victory.
