Galileo’s Choice to take away the Ballyroan Stakes from the 2011 winner, Treasure Beach
Contesting for the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes are eight three-year and above contestants. Including them is the 2011 winner of the race, Treasure Beach. The race will be held over a mile and four furlongs on Thursday, 9th August at Leopardstown. Threatening the chances of the last year’s winner to defend the title are Light Heavy and Galileo’s Choice.
Having gained the most during the new season is Galileo’s bay gelding, Galileo’s Choice. From the three starts during the new season, he won two of them. He rolled into the new season with success in the Easter Festival 8th-10th April Novice Hurdle on 15th February, 2012 at Fairyhouse over two miles through ten hurdles.
The favourite entry achieved this under the guidance of jockey, Mr. R. P. McNamara as the two dominated the field of four by 4 ½ lengths.
The D. K. Weld trained failed in retaining the winning composure and lost the second outing of the season to a seventh position. He lost the Grade 1 William Hill Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham race course over two miles and half a furlong.
The race was won by Cinders And Ashes by the margin of 1 ¼ lengths as Darlan settled as the runner-up, and Trifolium filled in the third spot.
Third seasonal outing of the bay gelding out of, Sevi’s Choice, resulted in a drop down from Grade 1 to a listed race.
The favourite entry won the Challenge Stakes (Listed Race) on 19th July, 2012 at Leopardstown over a mile and six furlongs. Riding with jockey, Pat Smullen, Galileo’s Choice raced fourth in the field of six. He made progress four furlongs out, and led when entering the very last furlong of the race. Kept on and won the race by the margin of two lengths.
The 3 to 1 entry for the race will become the mount for the same jockey as the two will break from the fourth gate. The distance will not be an issue for the bay gelding as he has won over distances more than what awaits him today, and the good to soft ground conditions suit him.
