Galina Voskoboeva achieves flawless victory over Sofia Shapatava – Baku Cup 2011
Monday July 18, 2011 saw the start of the first round of the Baku Cup 2011, Baku, Azerbaijan. The match was set and the two players met each other for the first time at the Baku Tennis Academy on acrylic rukort hard courts. It
was an easy victory for the Russian born Kazakhstani (Galina Voskoboeva) player against her 22-year-old Georgian opponent Sofia Shapatava. Finishing the match in under 55 minutes Galina won 6-0, 6-0.
The match being played at home for the Kazakh saw a support that boosted her performance. The first set of the match saw neither of the players throwing an ace and both of them struck two double faults each. However, The Kazakh
had twice as many points in her first serve (which was sixty nine percent) along with an amazing first return win with sixty two percent. Her defence was like a brick wall and didn’t allow her opponent a break point opportunity instead she managed to secure
three break points out of the five that were presented to her. On the contrary her rival Sofia was unable to hang in the set and soon lost the set because of a poor return game. Sofia had almost half the score of Galina in the total set points.
Even after taking a beating in the first set Sofia hadn’t learnt her lesson and although neither of the players served an ace, Galina had extreme precession and did not serve a single double fault which was a major improvement
from the first set. It was like as if she was on fire and the crowd went into frenzy when she managed to win all her break points along with a very solid defence as she threw no break points to her opponent’s advantage. Whereas, her rival wasn’t even trying!
It was as if she had lost all hope. In almost all her scores she (Sofia) was below the par. Losing the set with a difference of 17 total set points, the Kazakh won the match 2-0.
Across the board the score card saw Galina throw an ace, two double faults out of which one hit the net while the other was a line fault. She had an excellent serve along with a return game like a board that stood firmly at the
back of the court bouncing all that came her way. She won the match with a total of fifty two points out of seventy four while her opponent staggered in style and game and could hardly manage twenty two total match points out of the seventy four.
The world number 162, Galina, outran her opponent in both the sets and her presence was dominantly felt across the courts. The Kazakh will now either face the Romaine Monica Niculescu or Eirini Georgatou.
