Galina Voskoboeva ousts Marion Bartoli in the main draw – Rogers Cup 2011
The main draw of the Rogers Cup initiated on the 8th of August 2011 at the Rexall Centre in York University, Toronto, Canada. The Kazakh, Galina Voskoboeva sent the world number 9 Marion Bartoli back to France. Voskoboeva
landed an impressive 6-3, 6-3 victory against his her French opponent, in simply 75 minutes.
The two players had met four times prior to this event and the last time they drew racquets with each other was at the Women’s Open Tennis-Osaka, Japan. Marion Bartoli had won the match with 6-3, 7-5 and had added another point
to the head to head, making it 4-0. The Deity had granted her another chance to restore her dignity and so she did! For the first time Voskoboeva won a match against the French.
The world number 9 (Bartoli) had lost her charm and was unable to produce the high octane laser cut accuracy and struck 2 foot faults and a net ball whereas, Galina had struck 2 fewer double faults than Bartoli.
The 26-year-old French had bad timing because of which she was unable to hit her opponent’s junk balls and was only able to achieve 8 out of 22 return points; making it a pathetic 36% in her total return points along with, a failing
service technique she could barely achieve 50% of her total service points.
Marion lost the set and was restricted to only 3 game points because she was lacking in her overall technical fluency. She was not able to save 60% of her break points and instead won only 33%.
The top seeded Bartoli lost the set with 12% fewer points than her Kazakh opponent.
Having failed in the first set, Bartoli did not even try to bounce back, instead, to everyone’s disappoint her performance remained the same. Bartoli just didn’t seem to have her usual joie de vivre and lost the second set with
10 less points.
Amidst the second set, Voskoboeva had properly directed and generated her precision; hence she struck zero double faults and smashed 2 aces. Maximum power and topspin in her serve facilitated her grand win of 77% of the total service
points along with aiming flat liners at her opponent as return shots; she was able to clench an average 41% win in her total return points of the set.
In addition, her defence was sturdy and did not slip, and hence, did not set up a single breakpoint scenario for her adversary but t helped her in achieving 100% of break points won.
Following her loss in both the sets Bartoli said, "It was really a day where nothing was working at all,I tried my hardest but I committed so many mistakes it was hard to win. I was not feeling the ball and my legs were not moving.
I was late on everything and committing a lot mistakes, especially on my backhand. I have to go back to the practice court and practice hard. That's all I can do. It's happened to everyone to have a bad day".
The world number 135 Galina Voskoboeva restored her dignity and qualified by safely securing a berth in the second round of the Roger Cup 2011.
