Galina Voskoboeva outfoxes Olga Savchuk to clear second qualifier – Rogers Cup 2012
World number 57, Galina Voskoboeva, strained past the 215th ranked Ukrainian starlet, Olga Savchuk, to clear the second qualifying stage of the Rogers Cup at Montreal, Canada. She clinched the win in three sets 6-1,
5-7, 6-4 and marched on to compile a 4-1 head-to-head lead against the 24-year-old Ukrainian.
Voskoboeva commenced the match with a serve hold and broke serve in the following game to take a lead of 2-0. She repeated the similar performance in the following two games to post a comfortable lead of 4-0 upfront. Savchuk just
managed a single serve hold before the Kazakh superstar bagged the fourth serve hold to win the opening set with ease.
Despite a thumping first set score line, the confidence of the Ukrainian born didn’t drown and she continued to work hard. The second set witnessed a close match-up and both players continued to hold their serves except the opening
game breakthrough that was bagged by the Kazakh starlet.
The 10th game was in progress and Savchuk had to break serve to keep the match alive. She did that with some difficulty and levelled the scores at 5-5. She held her serve to love and broke serve for the second time in
succession to win the second set.
A traditional start to the final set witnessed both players hanging on to their respective serves before trading breakthroughs that kept the scores together at 2-2. Both players held their following serve games and the scores rushed
to 3-3.
The pivotal breakthrough for the Kazakh starlet came in the seventh game when she capitalized on the couple of unforced errors made by her opponent; coupled two stunning winners down the line to win the game 15:40. It was a much
needed turnaround for the 27-year-old Kazakh who was on the verge of an upset.
Voskoboeva held her serve in the following game and consolidated her position as the scores moved to 5-3 in her favour. Savchuk held her serve again but couldn’t broke serve to keep the match alive.
Voskoboeva is schooled to play her next match with Aravane Rezai of France.
