Galina Voskoboeva stuns Irina Falconi to advance into main draw of Brussels Ladies Open
Kazakh Galina Voskoboeva upset qualifying fifth seed, American Irina Falconi in straight sets to advance into the main draw of the 2011 Open de Bruxelles, a red clay court tournament held in Brussels, Belgium.
She is eyeing for her maiden WTA title in this $618,000 event after earning a 6-3, 6-2 success against 21-year-old Falconi in the final round of qualifiers.
World number 291 Kazakh now have a perfect winning record for ten matches she played. She recently won the ITF title at Casablanca before entering Royal Primerose Tennis Club in full confidence. Voskoboeva took one hour and twenty-seven minutes to down the American, ranked 175 places above her, on their first meeting.
Voskoboeva thundered into the opening set and reeled off first four games in a row through her exquisite forehands. However, she lost her serve in the proceeding game but hold on to her remaining serves to seal the set with a 6-3 win.
The Kazakh produced an acceptable first serve share of 64 percent as compared to slightly lower of American’s 62 percent, she earned a convincing 56 percent win on it. Voskoboeva saved an amazing nine out of ten breakpoints faced and to spice it further, she converted two out of three breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to help win the set easily.
The unseeded player carried her winning ways in the final set and won the first four games again before Falconi could hold on. She then held her remaining serves plausibly to clinch the set with an assuring 6-2 score line.
Voskoboeva raised her level of game in the second set as she faced zero breakpoint and converted two out of four breakpoint opportunities to her advantage. She produced a similar first serve share but registered an impressive 69 percent win on it.
The next challenge for the Kazakh is the Hungarian Agnes Szavay in the first round of this event.
Joining Voskoboeva in the main draw is Falconi’s compatriot, Abigail Spears. The American wild card entrant slaughtered Argentine Paula Ormaechea with double breadsticks in just under an hour.
Spears saved one out of two breakpoints conceded and converted six out of eight breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to clinch with an awesome 6-1, 6-1 score line. She clobbered three double faults and produced a lower first serve share of 62 percent as opposed to Argentinean’s 76 percent. However, the American registered a spectacular 69 percent win on it.
