Galina Voskoboeva topples Anna Chakvetadze to clear round two – Tashkent Open 2012
World number 77, Galina Voskoboeva, defeated the 261st ranked Russian qualifier, Anna Chakvetadze, in the second round of the Tashkent Open on Wednesday. It was simple straight sets 6-1, 6-3 victory for the eighth seed Kazakh who has reached the quarter-final stage of the tournament.
Voskoboeva bagged the opening serve game with no problem at all. The Russian qualifier looked solid at the beginning of the match but stumbled over in the fourth game of the match. The 27-year-old Kazakh won the first breakpoint and led the scores 3-1 at that stage.
It was expected that the Russian former world number five will bounce back into the contest but she failed to deliver at the right time. Moreover, she lost another breakthrough in the sixth game of the set that gave her opponent a resounding lead of 5-1.
There was no doubt that the experienced Kazakh competitor will win the opening set from that stage of the match. However, the Russian former world number five tried her best; won two points on her rival’s serve but couldn’t keep the set alive. It was a frustrating start to the match for the 25-year-old Russian who plans on breaking into the Top-100 players of the world by the end of the season.
Chakvetadze commenced the second set with a commanding serve hold and had an opportunity to win the breakpoint in the following game but squandered the golden opportunity. It was not expected of the Russian who had shown some intelligent display throughout the qualifying stages and in the first round contest.
No drama was witnessed for the first six games of the set. However, a hard fought breakthrough was earned by the eighth seed Kazakh who consolidated her position with a serve hold; pushing the scores to 5-3 in her favour. The Russian had to hold serve in order to keep the set alive but she failed to do so; gifting the triumph to her opponent.
Galina Voskoboeva marches on into the last eight of the tournament and faces Irina Camelia-Begu in the next match that will be contested on the eve of Thursday.
