Galina Voskoboeva upsets Vera Dushevina in quarterfinal – Hansol Korea Open 2011
The first upset in the quarterfinals on 23rd of September 2011 at the 2011 Hansol Korea Open came when Kazakh Galina Voskoboeva got the better of Russian Vera Dushevina. The two players battled it out on outdoor hard
courts for just 67 minutes of play and standing victorious was the unseeded Kazakh in straight sets of 6-2, 6-3.
The two players had met five times prior to this event, the first meeting in 2004, then in 2007, twice in 2009 and the most recent in 2010. Out of the five times they met Dushevina being the higher ranked player had a head-to-head
lead of 4-1.
Meeting for the sixth time, Dushevina opted to serve first, subsequently after winning the pitch and although, she didn’t smash an ace, she hit two backhand shots that netted and lost the very first game. Staring with a much better
start than her rival’s Voskoboeva not only broke her opponent in the first game but she held her serve in the second and capitalized on another break point to lead the scoreboard with a 2-0.
Dushevina made a re-appearance in the third game and held serve for the first time but was still two breaks down. Voskoboeva wanted revenge and again broke her adversary for the third time in the fifth game to further increase
the gap between each other’s points.
During the following three games both the players won on their respective serves; restricting Dushevina to only two games in the set, Voskoboeva won the opening set with a deftly 6-2 victory.
Commencing the second set was Voskoboeva, who was given yet another chance to retore her dignity against Dushevina. Both the players constantly won on their respective serves for the first four games and had tied the score at 2-2.
During the following four games, Voskoboeva and Dushevina held their serves for the initial three games. However, in the eighth game Voskoboeva got a lucky break and capitalized on it, to lead the set 5-3.
Serving for the match in the ninth game, Voskoboeva smashed a forehand winner down the line at 40-love and bagged a speedy 6-3 victory.
It was awhile since Voskoboeva had put up such a splendid performance, and with a marvellous display of her forehand and backhand, she was able to secure a place in the semi-final of the event.
