Question:

Gallery Wraps for Photos: Smart or tacky?

Hello,

I am considering printing my photos from updone.com with the gallery-wrap canvas option. I then plan on displaying my photos in local cafés and hopefully selling them. Do you think the canvas print is a smart, professional presentation for my purpose of display or is it just amateur and tacky? I've had most people (who know nothing about photography) say it looks great, and others claim it's weird. I would like some advice from more experienced photographers than myself: so what do you think?

Thank you ahead of time for your response...

  1. Done well, with quality material and workmanship, I think they're great.

I have done  several of my own prints this way.

  2. Odd you should ask this, I just got off the phone with my daughter who is planning to do the same thing. Sounds smart to me.

  3. Well... I have to say yes and no. I do think the gallery wraps look good... BUT... the problem is everyone and their brother does it now. A couple years ago, it was still a relatively new product, but now just about all photo printing sites are doing it, which, in my mind, lowers it's appeal and uniqueness.

What I much prefer is to have a galllery wrap done on the SMALL, 1/2 inch frames, then have this mounted into a "floating frame". This is a very upscale, elegant, and still rather unique way of presenting your photo. Floating frames are rather common in the painting art world, but not as common with photography.

If you and not familier with the gallery wrap / floating frame, here is where you can see what I am talking about.

I use Simply Canvas, but you must be a professional to use them, they do not sell to the general public. However, there are many other ways of getting a canvas into a floating frame. Any good local frame shop can do it, and I think Canvas on Demand on line also prints and mounts.
