The AS Saint-Etienne manager felt moved after his side managed to defeat Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in the Coupe de la Ligue, following an impressive display of nerves by les Verts.
The Coupe de la Ligue encounter between the two French clubs was a close one to call, with AS Saint-Etienne claiming victory, following a nail-biting penalty shoot-out that took place at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
The clash between Saint-Etienne and Paris Saint-Germain was a highly anticipated one, as les Parisiens sought to avenge their earlier defeat in the league, while les Verts still hoping to muster the same performance against their opponents that ensured them
the victory in the first place.
Christophe Galtier, the current manager of ASSE, was delighted at the team’s performance during the knock-out match. The manager also led his team to an earlier 1-2 victory at the Parc des Princes, and was moved by the team being able to manage the same
feat once again.
Upon being asked about his comments regarding the match, the Frenchman stated:
“There were a lot of emotions around the dressing room after the end of the game. We came up against a Paris side that did not play with the same heart. There were a lot of efforts taken on the goal and it was important that Ruffier thwarted those attempts.”
Galtier specifically highlighted Stephane Ruffier’s efforts during the game, and believes that the goalkeeper had an impressive game. It was Ruffier’s shot-stopping skills that led the team through to the next round of the cup.
The 46-year-old hopes that the team would exhibit the same determination and passion in the games to come, knowing that the team has what it takes to being a serious title contender.
The game was a tightly contested one, although Paris Saint-Germain maintained their dominance throughout the game, they were unable to break down ASSE’s resolute defence. The game ended 0-0, and it was finally decided upon penalty shoot-outs, where the hosts
secured a result that ensured their progress to the quarter finals of the Coupe de la Ligue.
Les Verts have their next encounter against fellow Ligue 1 outfit, AC Ajaccio. Galtier’s men would be hoping to continue their current form and will try to secure all three points against the Corsican club.
