  1. Its a great place! I'd stay in the city, in hostels or B&Bs if you can afford it. B&B's between the city and Salthill would be cheaper, still nice, and within walking distance to the city. I'd recommend Bayberry House, you can find the info online. O'Neachtains tours do day trip bus tours to areas around Galway, Clare, and Connemara. The Cliffs of Moher tour and the Connemara tour are definitly worth doing. For things to do inside the city, Galway has the best night life! Theres lots of pubs, Tig Coili and Taafes are tiny but have great real irish music, and the bigger ones like the Quays are nice too. If your there on a Tuesday, Monroes has Irish dancing. Directions are easy, people tend to be helpful. Good luck!

  2. As someone who lived there for 3 years and still live within 50 miles of it imo Galway city should be your main base, it is the main town in the region and should be easy to manage as it has less than 100,000 inhabitants  .

Galway city itself is an amazing town with a huge variety of shopping and nightlife to cater to all tastes including great pubs like:

    The Kings Head

    Taffes

    Front Door

    McSwiggans

    Busker Brownes

The Quays and loads of others http://www.galway1.ie/

Salthill is a seaside promenade just minutes from the city centre and includes casinos, and a small family type theme park in the summer and large indoor pool with water slides etc.

Spiddal about half an hour from Galway city is a beautiful little town close to the seaside and Galway bay.

Connemara about 1 hours drive from Galway city encompasses about 1/4 of the county. The village of Leenane, Kylemore Abbey, Connemara national Park and the awesome town of Clifden are well worth a visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connemara

Close to Galway is the amazing Cliffs of Moher and the beautiful rugged Burren region of county Clare, littered with caves, rock formations and wild flowers found nowhere else in the world.   The Aran Islands are short boat ride from Galway city will give you an idea what rural ireland is all about in the fast paced world of the 21st Century.

Day trips to large towns like Athlone, Westport and Sligo are also recommended.
