Gambhir insists his opening pair with Sehwag is the best in the world – Cricket News Update
Indian openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/G-Gambhir-c1447 might not have scored a century over in the past year, but the latter insists they still make the best opening duo.
The Delhi lads have been among India’s most successful Test opening pairs. The Sehwag-Gambhir duo is one of the only five opening combinations to have scored more than 4000 Test runs at the top of the order (4110 runs from 81 innings).
But their form has declined over the past couple of years, as the two has not put on a century stand in a Test innings in almost two years, raising qualms over the duo’s future.
However, Gambhir feels his average of 53 in partnership with Sehwag makes them the best openers in India.
"We still average 53 as an opening pair, which I think is one of the best when it comes to opening the batting in world cricket," Gambhir told PTI. "There are not many opening pairs who have played for such a long time and have an average of 53 per innings. And if 53 is not good enough, I don't know what is good enough."

But Gambhir hit back at detractors suggesting them to have a look at the stats before criticising their performance.
"As an opening pair, you average 50 per inning and if you are giving 50 runs start in every innings, you can't do more and if people talk about not contributing, I will suggest them to look at the stats," said the 31-year-old left-hander, who has so far played 50 Tests scoring 3770 runs at an average of 44.35.
