Gambling bill of Iowa may be amended – Horseracing news
The state of Iowa is in process of getting a gambling bill passed. Amidst all this, the groups of people who are interested to see the end of dog racing are making efforts to get this provision in the bill as well in order to avoid delay.
However, it would not be as easy as it all seems. First and foremost, the group of people who want to end dog racing in the state of Iowa would need to have a minimum number of votes before their voice could be heard.
The bill in which the dog racing provision is planned to be included is related to gambling. It concerns the horse racing industry and the legalisation of casino gambling in the state of Iowa. Internet poker was hoped to be approved this time around but
that did not materialise.
However, internet poker has not been given a complete no. It has been suggested that a detailed report be drafted that would look into the matter and highlight the necessary implementation and related measures if internet poker is to become a reality. It
is hoped that the subject will be brought to debate next year.
It is not impossible that greyhound racing bill would not be progressed this year. Jeff Danielson, who is a Senator as well as the chairman of the Senate State Government Committee does not think it is probable and does not support the greyhound racing provision
being added to the gambling bill.
What the provision specifically deals with is the matter of prohibiting it at two racetracks in Iowa. These racetracks are by the name of Dubuque and Council Bluffs. Danielson is of the opinion that the dog racing issue is not yet comprehensively studied
and it needs to be looked at more closely before an appropriate decision could be made on the matter.
However, Jim Carney, who is an operator of Horseshoe Casino and Bluffs Run Greyhound Park in Council Bluffs does not agree with the senator and thinks the matter is ready to be taken up this time around. “We definitely want to try to amend the bill,” Carney
said.
