Though Spartak Moscow satisfied their fans after recording a brilliant performance in the latest round of Russian Premier League action against Krylia Sovetov Samara at Metallurg stadium on Sunday, they are certainly not amongst
the favourites to win against Benfica on Wednesday.
And while the media have raised a lot of question marks on the Moscow-based club’s credentials to win their next UEFA Champions Leagues’ group stage match against the Portuguese outfit at Estadio da Luz, Valery Karpin has calmed
the media after saying that winning and losing is part of the game.
“No need to rush from one extreme to another. We had never been a disaster, and now, on the contrary, do not want to say that everything is just wonderful. We want to win after losing our first two matches some time ago.”
“I think it is a very important match. And I do not think the match will be a matter of life or death.” The former Real Sociedad man was quoted as saying.
Karpin, who resigned from his managerial position at Luzhniki stadium to take a more advanced role in the management after giving away his position to Unai Emery, revealed that the Spartachi will try utmost to claim all three points
against Benfica.
News in Russian media suggested that the Red-Whites are likely to part company with one of their strikers after signing Waris Abdul from BK Hacken. However, Karpin has denied such stories, saying that the Ghanaian International
is one for the future.
“Waris is a promising young striker who will increase competition in the squad. His arrival does not mean that we are planning to lay off any striker from the squad.” He concluded.
Commenting on the contract rebel Artem Dzyuba, Karpin revealed that the 24-year-old striker wants to get mote first-team action after expressing his dissatisfaction of being provided the bench role in recent matches.
Karpin urged Dzyuba to work harder to claim a starting eleven position, admitting that the Russian national has a bright future.
