im looking into game development, particularly at SCAD, but their major of game development seems a bit vague. i am not interested in programming. i am more into art and a little design. does that major just help out with all fields to prepare? or if i am trying to become a game artist, is it the wrong major? thanks.

  1. If you’re interested in becoming a game artist, you can go to just about any art school or university that offers a degree in art.  In the day-to-day of game development, game art falls into two categories: 3D (modeling, rigging, animating, etc) and 2D (concept, textures, maps, Flash games, etc).  Being competent in both can be useful, but deciding now which of the two you’re more interested in can help with your college selection.

If you’re most interested in 3D art, look for schools that offer 3D or computer art and animation.  Look for programs that train you in the use of Maya and 3DStudio Max.  The Art Institutes in particular are known in the industry for covering all the needed knowledge, but aren’t always as rigorous as industry types would like (ie, you may not be pushed to create the best art you can).  SCAD is also known as a good program for 3D artists.  Any private art school with a major in 3D art would likely be outstanding.

If you’re more interested in the 2D aspects of game art, you’re best off getting a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts at a school that will put you through all the basics (figure drawing, painting, etc) as well as teach you how to use high-tech tools like Photoshop.  I think SCAD is also well-thought-of within the industry when it comes to 2D, but any competitive school with a BFA and classes on Photoshop should prepare you well.

One thing to keep in mind as you’re trying to decide is that there are a lot more jobs in the industry currently for 3D artists than there are for 2D artists.  Concept artist jobs in particular are extremely competitive, while most studios are constantly on the lookout for talented modelers and animators.

And one last note: within the game industry, “design” is a completely separate profession from artist.  Game designers work almost entirely with writing and math to come up with all the details of the gameplay, and most can’t draw above a stick figure level.  But it sounds like you want to be a game artist, not a designer, so stick with what you love.

  2. How's your art?  Mine sucks.  Not everyone knows how to do everything.  If your art is good, then you just have the sales task of finding a job that can use you.
