I'm disappointed in Erik's answer. You do NOT assume the dealer has a 10 as their down card. This is a common misconception made by BAD players. In reality, it is more likely that the dealer does NOT have a 10 than does.

Basic strategy is a system of playing developed by mathematically determining the best play for every possible situation in the game of blackjack. You as a player make no assumptions as to what the dealer's down card is, and in fact, if you want to play correctly, you make no decisions at all. You just memorize the playing chart (or take one with you to the table) and do exactly what it says. Otherwise, you are increasing the houses edge, and thereby increasing the amount of money you will lose over time.

Go download and print up a blackjack strategy card. You can get one at most gambling strategy websites. It will tell you when to hit, stand, split and double-down. Most casinos don't even mind you using one at the table. Follow it and with a little luck, you will be a winner before you know it!

Learning to count cards give you a huge Advantage.  You can check out on the net different ways to count, easiest being the hi -lo system.  The key to any counting system though is you want a deck with a lot of tens, if there are a lot of low cards the deck is stack against you.  The other key to bj is money management.  The system i use is a basic unit system.  Where I will bet 2 units on my first bet.  If i win my first best then I will decrease the unit to 1.  IF i win that I increase 1 unit each time i win after that. If I lose a bet at any time, I reset and start over and bet 2 units.   I make sure before i start that i have at minimum at least 20-25 times my unit.  So if Im playing $25 units then i would need at least $500 to play.   the key to this strategy is in black jack it is hard to win 2 hands in a row. But if you win the 1st hand and lose the second hand than you only give the house back half its money.  Also, by increasing the unit each time you win you are taking advantage of those hot streaks, while never risking your money to do it.  Anyways Good luck.

No one has yet given a real answer.  Basic strategy can't really be explained in one or two sentences.

Simply put though, the object is not to get 21, the object is to beat the dealer.

You have to know and understand how the dealer plays to understand how you should play.  

One person was correct in saying to assume the dealer has a 10, but if the dealer has a 5 showing, and has a 10 underneath, that's 15, and the dealer must take another card.  If you have 12, you would want to stay, If the dealer gets a card that is 7 or more, he will bust, and you will win.  That's the premise of basic blackjack strategy, you have to understand the rules of each table.

Basic strategy was developed in order to determine the correct action for any given Blackjack situation. That does not mean it will always be the winning action, but it allows you to play percentages to increase profit  IE, if you have a 10 and the dealer is showing a five, is it mathematically correct to doubledown?  yes it is.  There are too many situations to list here but it's easy to find a basic strategy table on the internet.

Also contrary to popular belief, counting cards is not basic strategy, although if you do not understand basic strategy, your ability to count cards will be worthless.

Assume your dealer has a ten face down.  Hit until you tie or can beat the dealer.  For example if the dealer has a seven up, then assume he has 17 total and hit if you have 17 or less.

Because the dealer has mechanical system of play, it is possible to come up with an optimal mathematical way to play. That is what basic strategy is, it is the choices that always deliver the highest expected value in the long run assuming the remaining deck is balanced.

Anytime you deviate from basic strategy, you are increasing the casino house edge. The only reason to deviate is if you are card counting and know that the remaining deck composition has changed significantly enough for a different optimal decision.

counting cards doesn't work anymore with the shoe (up to 7 decks in one) the basic strategy is to get 21 or as close to 21 as possible, i always hit on 15 and stay on 17. 16 depends on the cards of the dealer
