Gamecocks grab victory against Golden Eagles – Volleyball News
The Girls’ Volleyball team of Jacksonville State University (Gamecocks), worked out an amazing win over Tennessee Tech (Golden Eagles) on Tuesday, September 13. The two opponents went head to head in Jacksonville State, Alabama. The hosts outshone the visitors
in straight sets and claimed victory by posting a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, and 25-21) win. JSU improved to the overall record of 3-8 after this particular win, while the girls from Tennessee are still struggling with a 1-10 win/loss ratio in the 2011 Season.
Gamecocks
Junior Hivya Leite showcased a great game and notched her first career double-double. She was credited with 13 kills and 11 digs in the match. Likewise, her team-mate, senior Liza Senenkova, equally deserved the praise as she was the only other player with
double figures. She got 11 kills on 18 attacks with an overall attack percentage of .444. Lauren Harkins of the Gamecocks did a great job at defence and received applause for 11 digs. The back-row player, sophomore Kelly Cole, also saved points through her
excellent digging on the court and helped JSU with nine impressive digs.
Golden Eagles
The Tennessee Tech team tried to match its performance with the Gamecocks by Ellen Conti’s attacks. Conti pitched in nine points with a hitting percentage of .286. Natalie Penrod notched nine kills, while Kelsey Gray contributed points through seven kills
and three blocks.
Match Summery
The Gamecocks opened the match with quick points. They served well and hit power shots which promptly touched the ground. Tennessee Tech recently gave a solid performance at the UT Chattanooga Invitational and it was expected that they would give a hard
time to JSU. However, Gamecocks built great momentum in the game and did not allow the opponents to hinder their performance. The home team secured the first set of the game with 8 points, 25-17.
Golden Eagles came up with a renewed determination in second set and tried to cover the loss of the previous set. They attacked with Ellen Conti who hit the ball from different angles. Nonetheless, the Jacksonville team kept the operations well under control
and continued with success. Eagles could only raise their score by one-point in the second set and received a 18-25 defeat.
The third set was even better display of volleyball by the Eagles but the Gamecocks handled the situation skilfully. At some points, the visitors came really close to the hosts but could not achieve the desired results. JSU squad announced match victory
after winning third set in row 25-21.

The Tennessee Tech girls will have another chance to shake off their bad form in the next match on Friday. They will be challenged by the UT Martin Skyhawks in the first home game. Moreover, the Jacksonville State will also host UT Martin Volleyball team
on Saturday. The admission for match is free and it likely to attract a good number of volleyball enthusiasts to the venue.
