Question:

Ganglion Cyst | Surgery | Few Questions?

Today I went to the doctors because my wrist was always hurting for a bout a year now and I had a little bump. Well I got X-Rays done and the doctor said it is most likely a Ganglion Cyst. Well he is positive.

So I need to get an MRI done in the next few weeks to confirm that it is a Ganglion Cyst.

He wants to try Cauterizing it first. But I don't really want to have a bump and my wrist always cracking. But he said if it doesn't work, then I'm going to need surgery done.

But I'm only 15 and I'm a little nervous about the thought of surgery. But I'd rather have that done.

But I have a few questions.

I know what they will do.

1. Do I get put to sleep? (Hopefully Yes)

2. Will I need stitches? If so, how long will they be in?

3. Will the stitches leave a scar?

4. Will this be painful?

Please tell me all I should expect if you had it done or know about this stuff.

  1. Here are 2 good sites for you to look at.

    http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/Answers...

This one has a surgery section that will give you all the info.  It's better to know up front.  It's not so scary that way.

Yes they may, but probably not.  It's not a big thing

Probably, I think about 7-10 days

Depends on how big the incision is. Probably just a few if any,  You are so young it will won't be bad

The pain will be controlled easily with pain meds.  Maybe for a week or so.  Good luck,, you'll be fine

  2. Well, I had a Ganglion cyst on my hand a few years ago. The doctor didn't need to x-ray it or anything.

You need to get a second or third doctor's opinion.  Always a good idea.

I did not get mine removed, It went away in a few months on its own.  The doc said if I have surgery, then I'll just have a scar on my hand.

As for your questions, I don't know really, but find out if you even need this surgery or is your doctor just knife happy.

As long as it's non cancerous and not bothering you, you don't need to get it removed.

  3. You would probably be given a local to numb the area (not put to sleep).  You will probably need stitches for a week or so.  Scar will be hardly noticeable.  I don't think it will be painful - just uncomfortable.
