Question:

Gap year - Travelling?

Unfortunately i'll have to work for most of my gapyear to get the money to travel, but i plan to travel in 2009... around May/June/July/August before i go to UNI, which should be in september 2009

Does it particularly matter when i decide to travel? Most people i know are going around the xmas period.. i feel i'm leaving it too late. I'm hoping to go to Australia.. does anyone have any idea how much it would cost to travel for about two months?

Also, does anyone feel maybe around these months it would be wise to travel elsewhere? i'm at a complete loss and any advice/websites would be very helpful

  1. It'll be "winter" in Australia - most people go there over xmas because it's summer, and you will see Aus at it's best. It's a great place to go at any time, and if you go to the right places, you'll have great weather. Don't make the mistake most tourists to and spend all your time in Sydney/Melbourne. Travel up to North Queensland, via Gold coast, sunshine coast or to Western Australia. Just spend a few days in Sydney to see the opera house etc.

You could do a stopover on the way there in Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo - spend a week or so somewhere different!

Not sure about you're costs, a flight will cost you around £800 return though.

  2. Why not get a Working Holiday visa and come here for at least part of your gap year? You'll be able to work if you need to make ends meet and casual work is very easy to come by in most places. If you don't work at all, hostel accomodation will cost an average of $30 per day and food another $20ish. Drinks, travel expenses and dining out on top of that, so say $4500 for 2 months though you could get by on less. If you do some bar or food service work, you'll earn something like $14 or $15 per hour if you're under 21.

Australia's climate is so good and so varied that every month is a good month here. When we talk about how cold we are in winter and how freezing it is, believe me, you'll probably be getting around in t-shirts  and jeans in most places, particularly in Queensland. It's the exact middle of winter here in Brisbane in the very south of the state, and I'm sitting in front of an open window at 9.50pm in a t-shirt and I'm not at all cold. Today, the temperature was 24C (75.2F) for most of the day and up north, it's quite a bit warmer.

  3. Don't do it. Stay at home and read. You'll enjoy it more. Wanderlust soon fades.
