Gap year in australia?

I'd like to go to Oz for a gap year, has anyone done it? What would you recommend I do and where should I go. I'd like to see the country and get to the place a bit better. Do you live in Oz where shoudl I go?

Lots of young people from all over the world come to Australia for a year or so and backpack all over the country.  They stay in youth hostels, buy a Greyhound bus pass (eg. unlimited kilometers or so many thousand kms. or passes for a certain period of time) and pick up casual work.  It is fairly easy if you are under 30 to get a one year work visa.  Most backpackers start in Sydney and make there way up the coast to Cairns.  Those with more time go to Darwin, Alice Springs, Broome down to Perth, across to Adelaide, then Melbourne and some even make it to Tasmania.

Just google backpacking Australia or youth hostels Australia and you will get lots of ideas.  I think this is a fabulous country to spend your gap year in.  You will have an amazing time.  Good luck with your project.

I live in Melbourne, its a nice place to live and the country can be good.

But i'd prefer to go to London and live neer the country there :)
