Question:

Gaps in wall, near ceiling, how can I fix it?

I live in a duplex. The building used to be one huge house but was converted into a duplex in the early 90's. the wall that seperates the two duplexes has small gaps in it along where the wall and ceiling meet.

My hubby and I don't smoke but our neighbors do and when they smoke the smell comes into our duplex through those small gaps in the wall/ceiling.

I cannot stand the smell anymore and I need to patch those gaps but have no idea how to do so. I have talked to my landlord and he won't fix it, but gave me permission to do so.

So, my question is How do I fix these gaps?

They are small about 1/2 in tall, and 3 inches wide, there are several of them all along the wall/ceiling.

Please keep in mind that I work ridiculous hours, so i need something I can either do bit by bit, or quickly. Just as long as it solves this problem. And not just a quick fix, something that will last.

  1. Go to your local hardware store and get some insulation meant for gaps.  It looks like a round tube of foam about 1/2 inch in diameter.  Cut pieces to fit the gaps and then caulk.  This should cost you less than $10 and take less than a half hour.  You may have to borrow a caulk gun if you don't have one or don't want to buy one.

  2. They sound small enough that spackle would work.  Nearest hardware store for that and a putty knife, a little sandpaper, then paint if needed.

  3. not quite that simple. that wall is(should be) a fire-rated wall. you will need to use the same material that's on the rest of the wall. once patched, you can install crown moulding.
