Question:

Garage Ceiling: hanging bike hooks?

by  |  earlier

I got this pulley system to hang my bike on the ceiling of my garage...

I used a stud finder to find the joist, but the screws will NOT go in more then halfway, no matter what I do. Tried nailing a nail in... tried making a hole with a drill bit then doing the screws, nothing is working. Found another joist and I'm having the same problems, the screws just stop going in mid way. I'm using an electric drill too!!

Can anyone help?

  1. When you drilled the pilot hole was the bit as long (or longer) as the screws you're using?

You might be running into knots...they can be a real bit*h to drive into - see if you can get some leverage to help your cause.

Those are the only thoughts that come to mind.  Good luck!

  2. You are either not using the right size drill bit or not drilling in far enough. There is no reason they shouldn't go in. Try using a s***w driver to get them the rest of the way in.

  3. If it's an old house the wood might have toughened up (or it could be oak which is tough to start with) so the size of the pilot hole is important. Check that the pilot hole is long enough and big enough.

You could try greasing your screws but I believe it's the above problem.
