Question:

Garage Door Problem?

My car has been stuck in the garage for two days because I can't open it after it slammed down when I tried to close it. It seems like a small part of the spring broke and just below the spring a part that attaches to the garage door totally broke off the garage door. The screws that connected also broke off. I tried everything to try to open the garage with my hands but its too heavy. I believe its almost stuck to the ground since it slammed the floor so hard the time it broke. I just need to get the garage door open for a minute to get my car out. Also there is a red string thats hanging down, what does pulling on that do? Any suggestions?

-Thanks

  1. to be totally safe..id suggest that u not pull on that red string b/c anythings posible at that moment..u shuld try to get sum sort of mechanic or atleast get some of ur guy friends to help u out

  2. If your garage door is connected to an "automatic opener" , the red string is probably a "disengager", which disconnects the door from the drive mechanism. If this is the case, then pulling the red string should disconnect the door from the electric drive-train, allowing you to lift the door.

  4. Find a friend or 2 to help you out.  Have them grab ahold of the door as you push the button for the opener.  This will help lighten the load a little.  They will lift the door and hold it open while you drive out.  Reverse the procedure to close it, being sure not to let it slam again.  Then call a pro to fix the spring.  This is not a DIY project.  Hope this helps.

  5. prop the garage door up with something strong, several chairs, ladders, whatever you got, then slowly move the car in or out depending on where it is. You may also have to take a little air out of the tires so it doesn't scratch you paint as you back out.....If the chairs aren't high enough, put them on top of book or bricks or something else.

Another option is take out your car jack and place that on something high like a chair and then jack up the door just enough to move the car....
