Garage Door won't open.

I have a Craftsman modle 139.53637SRT garage door opener. My remote will open and close the door if I am within 8 feet. Beyond that it does not work. I have followed the steps for re-programming, I have unpluged the unit, and I have changed out the battery. I would like to know if you have any suggestions on fixing it?
