I'm getting a new car in September and I just got an email from the garage requesting I send then a car insurance certificate so they can tax and register the car....I'm a bit confused as I have never had to do this when buying a new car before. As I'll be transferring my insurance from my existing car to the new one..will the insurance company give me a certificate for a car in advance ??

  1. A lot of dealers do this now, as their part in ensuring the car is properly insured when it leaves their premises.  They rarely tax it under their own insurance cover.  You need to speak to your insurers (and the dealer) to negotiate this.  When last I did this, armed with a positive hand-over date, my insurers sent me proof of the change to the new car  a few days in advance which enabled the dealer to tax it.
