My garage door only closes like around halfway and then opens back up. There is nothing in the way of the door closing and I even unhooked the door from the carriage but still it only goes to halfway and then goes back. Is there like a timing belt adjuster or something like that because this started happening a couple of days ago and before that there was never any problems with it. What can I do? I really don't have the money right now to go and buy a new opener. If it helps I have a Genie Model 940A.

  1. Your opener uses a plastic drive tape instead of a chain or s***w. The tape is available on the internet if you look. Only some places stock them. Around 40$. The tape has deteriorated and is jamming on the drive sprocket inside the unit. To change it properly it should be taken apart and cleaned but if you are mechanical it is not difficult. Lube new tape with good low temperature white grease lightly. (ignore those that tell you not to do this, but it must be low temp grease like Lubriplate) A schematic should come with the new tape. I will try to find the company for you. They are in Indiana. I got a tape for a customer and it fit perfectly. Check safety reverse for proper operation when you finish. E-mail me if you need help.  Make sure all pieces of old tape are gone and you slide the new tape into the proper slots in the aluminum rail. (very top and very bottom slot. if you do not you will ruin the tape).

  2. there is a sensitivity s***w you can increase the down force check the rail make sure all seams are tight spray w d 40 and clean dirt with rag when running and re lubricate with grease. check photo eyes make sure they aren't a little off , make sure when the top section comes down its not hitting the trigger type limit, if this unit has a red box the sensitivity adjustment is under the tape that says genie slide this out ,vinyl s***w under. the number for genie is.... 1800 ok genie.

  3. What usually happens is the electric eye is either blocked (something is in the path of the light beam) or one of the two sides (light source or detector) is out of alignment.

With an automatic garage door, there is a light beam that shines across the bottom of the door to a receiver on the other end of the door opening, about a foot off the ground. When the light beam is detected by the receiver, the door closes normally. But, if something disrupts the beam, the door won't close, so as not to crush a child or animal that happens to be in the doorway.

Maybe you set something down too close to the door, so that it blocks the light beam. Or, maybe you bumped into either the light source or receiver, and now the beam is out of alignment.

If the area is clear, you can try adjusting the beam to hit the receiver correctly. Otherwise, you'll have to call out a garage door repair company to fix it. They'll also do troubleshooting on the unit, in case the realignment doesn't fix the problem and it's a bad control unit or something in the opener.

  4. There is some kind of tension adjuster on most of them.  I was having this problem and my neighbor adjusted it for me, but I'm not sure exactly what he did.  Do an online search to see if you can locate the owners manual for your exact model, or see if there is a Genie customer service number or something.  If you know where to find the adjuster (I think it was on the box mounted on the inside roof of my garage in my case) it is an easy fix.
