Question:

Garage door opener doesn't lock garage?

I have two garage doors (with openers) at my house. Both are brand "Overhead Garage Door Company" model 65A openers. The other day I noticed that with either door I can walk up to the door and just lift the doors up. When I do the entire chain moves (since the opener is engaged and not in manual mode).

There must be something internal to the opener that usually prevents people from just opening the door right? Its very interested that *BOTH* my openers are doing this though. Other than that the openers are working just fine and the motor is opening and closing the doors fine.

  1. ive been a door man for thirty years never heard this ! most of the new openers are chain or belt drive ,but either one has an internal gear witch should not be able to move. better call the installer, asap!

  2. I'm just a homeowner who has fixed Stanley & Craftsman garage door openers before as well as completely replacing with a brand new Craftsman garage door opener...in addition to having to replace the entire wooden garage door panel and AGREE with 2DAMBIG that I have never seen a garage door opener that works lifting & closing correctly that anyone can open from the outside as you described.

  3. Garage door openers have an emergency pull cord so that the door can be opened when there is no power. It is usually a cord with a red handle and will be about a foot or so back from the door  when the door is closed. It is located on the chain. It is possible that yours are not engaged. Try pulling the cord, and then push the button to open the door. The chain should operate, but the door will stay down. When the chain stops, manually open the door all the way until it clicks into the emergency release. Make sure that the lever for the release is all the Way up and that it has engaged firmly. If that is the problem, then the doors should now work properly. Check to make sure that nothing is causing the cord to pull when the door comes down as that would unlatch the door and allow the problem that you describe. If that is not the problem, then you should call for service. The doors absolutely should not be able to be opened manually unless the cord has been pulled.
