The problem is in a detached one car garage. Power in the garage also operates a sprinkler system which is working. A keypad on the outside of the garage has not worked for some time. One remote is kept in the house and the other is in a car. Door is wooden, the opener is a "Sears" brand with an "eye" safety on each side (bottem)of the door and no key release or battery backup. Only one window that hasn't been opened...ever, is painted shut and there is furnature in front of it in the garage. There is a skylight that seems to have been made of an acrylic sheet with a lot of silicone. Walls are wood frame construction with cement-asbestos tile siding. I know if I can get in any other way I can pull the release to open the door, but: What is the least damaging way to get in?

Considering removing the door molding but don't know if I can then reach the catches. There is no particular emergengy. Possible junk fell infront of safety and turned off opener? Thanks.

  1. Check the batteries in the remotes, they may be dead. As well check the battery in the keypad. One of these might do it for you.If not I would go for the window, heck it doesn't work any way. This is probably cheaper than a skylight.

  2. Did you try a new battery for the remote, If not then you will have to break a window, but lay a thick blanket or moving pad over the frame when you go in so glass don't get you. Maybe in the future you could get a small strong box and mount it to the outside wall and extend your pull cord to the inside of it with a handle attached to it, the key lock will keep the neighbors from opening you garage when you are away.

  3. The skylight would probably be hard to reseal so it doesn't leak.  Sounds like the window is the best option but it will take some real work to get in there and you will probably have to repair/replace the window afterward.  Don't you really want an access door in that garage anyway?  Start now by knocking a hole in the wall.....  just an idea ;-)

It will be very hard to reach the rope on the opener mechanism as it is high unless the garage door has windows in it.  Good luck on this one.

  4. go thru the skylite......that is what a robber would do, lol........that is the easiest one to repair and fix.......

  5. If the key pad dose not work, remove it, smash it or pry it off. Take the two wires going to it and touch and hold them together, it will override the safety, and open the door. It's a very easy way to break in at very little to no cost. Then replace if you like.

  6. Try the front door and work your way from there.
