Question:

Garage door won't roll up

My automatic garage door doesn't roll up completely when activated. It will only roll a short distance (approx. 6 in.) before stopping. I released and re tightened cables on both sides but I am still experiencing the same problem. Any suggestions?

  1. simply adjust the Upward Limit with a small screwdriver a forth a turn at a time , checking after each adjustment.

  2. Clean and grease the tracks the rollers run in about once a year.  Too much friction between roller and track will cause problems.

  3. I had the exact same problem about 6 months ago.  In my case, one of the torsion springs above the garage door snapped.  This is very likely to happen if they were installed over 10 years ago.  These springs are used to offset the weight of the garage door since it is very heavy.  Without the springs, the garage door opener cannot lift the garage door on its own.  If this is indeed your problem, it will be very easy to spot because you will see that the spring is broken into two pieces.  I've heard it can be dangerous to replace the springs yourself so you should probably hire a professional.  It should cost about $150 give or take $25.

  4. it sound like you have a genie s***w drive unit if the moter runs but the doors not moving the trolley is bad ( plastic worm drive )

  5. I wish I had the correct answer for you because mine does the same thing from time to time.  I live a few miles from several tv towers and I think that affects it.

I have checked my safety lights on the floor and I have changed the battery in the remotes and I have checked the door's travel on the rail.

You might need to reprogram the remote to the opener or to your car.

There are so many electronic devices/ waves traveling thru our airspace now and it will only become more concentrated.

I have never narrowed it down to anything specifc, but usually if I  unlock the door from the opener and relock it a day or so later,  it  works again.  It kinda 'fixes itself.'

    EDIT

You might want to check the rotation of the pulley when you activate it.   Use the remote and push the button while you are standing next to it on a ladder.  Check to see that the pulley is rotating, and the belt/chain is on the pulley.

You might want to throw some oil or grease up there while you are at it.  That is probably not the problem, but it  won't hurt to do it while you are up there.

  6. Is there something in the way of the safety electronic eye, check the alignment. they are located on the bottom part of the inside. also check the location of the stop switch, has this moved? This is on the upper bar of the opener. Also review your owners manual. Also check on-line for the mfg. technical service.
