I have to replace my garbage disposal, I am a renter so I don't want to pay too much but I also want something that will last a couple years. What would you recommend? HP, price, ease of installation...

  1. Anything 1/2 hp or more will be find. Expect to pay $75-100 for one.

My question is why are you buying it? As a renter this is the landlords responsibility. If the property had a disposal when you signed the lease, he or she should be paying for the new one as well as the installation. Don't be taken advantage of.

  2. As a renter, you should not pay for it, unless you broke it or the landlord says so. The landlord should pay for it.

Anyways, anything with 1/2 or higher should be bought for power and the price is 80-100 dollars. Ease of installation would be in sink erator (bager 5) sold at Home Depot

  3. Waste King or Insinkerator have worked for me.  Last install took about 1 hour.  But, I am experienced and have the tools.  They all install about the same.  They all work the same so price is the key.  Pay the least possible.  Even a working used one should last two years.

  4. as stated here, if you replace it with the same model/brand, the change will be easier and fast.

i DO NOT recommend ISE Badger "unless" you don't plan to stay there more than 2 years.  the Badger series is the bottom of the line and does not hold up as well and the next model up.

it all depends on how long you plan to lease...

  5. if you already have an insinkerator, replacing it is simple. it has a clamp that unscrews to let the old unit down put the new unit up and tighten the clamp. otherwise replace with insinkerator. full installation is very easy.

NOTE: if you have a dishwasher it will connect to the disposer. the disposer has a plug in the port that has to be knocked out first. if you have a dishwasher be sure you do this and hook up the dishwasher again. you will thank me later.

  6. It may be in your lease, but the landlord will have a bigger headache when the thing plugs up.

I like the Badger brand, they've got several great models. Installation isn't hard but be sure to trip the circuit breaker before you start.

  7. You rent so its not your problem.

  8. It is easiest to replace with an identical one because that way you don't need to replace the fitting in the sink or adjust/change the plumbing either.
