Garbine Muguruza Blanco overpowers injured Patricia Mayr-Achleitner in round two – Fes WTA 2012
Spanish qualifier, Garbine Muguruza Blanco, jolted down a 6-4 retirement victory against the Austrian contestant, Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, at the Grand Prix De SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem 2012 on Wednesday. As a result, the
18-year-old booked a spot in the quarter-finals at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) clay court event taking place in Fes, Morocco.
The Spanish teenager stayed on track to bid for her maiden WTA career title after outshining Mayr-Achleitner who withdrew from the tournament after the opening set.
The Venezuela native, Blanco made a strong start at the Royal Tennis Club de Fes and drew the first blood in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead. Apart from losing her edge in the successive game, she put her head in the match and
pulled out the opener with a 6-4 score line after capitalising on another break chance in the last game.
However, the Austrian rising star on the other side got injured after the opening set, ultimately rewarding the match to Blanco.
Ranked 139th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Blanco will next confront her fellow qualifier, Kiki Bertens of Netherlands. The Dutch youngster stunned the sixth seed, Chanelle Scheepers, in a three-set thriller to set-up
this duel. She was broken down eight times but capitalised on eight out of 14 break opportunities to formulate a 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 score line.
The tournament’s top seed, Anabel Medina Garrigues will join Blanco in the final eight. She took down the Luxembourgian starlet, Mandy Minella, in straight sets to occupy this spot.
"I'm very happy to be in the quarterfinals," Medina Garrigues was quoted after the match. "In the next match I want to try to play a little bit more freely and go for my shots a little bit more. If I can do this I think I can continue
to do well."
The Spanish number one ruled throughout her match and after breaking Minella’s serve seven times, she manipulated a 6-2, 6-3 success.
Next in queue for Medina Garrigues is the fifth seed, Simona Halep, who triumphed over her compatriot, Alexandra Cadantu, in straight sets to reach this spot.
