Garcia and Westwood victorious, McDowell suffers unexpected defeat
This time around there was no heroic ending by Graeme McDowell, he lost against Zach Johnson 2&1 in the seventh singles match.
McDowell was the hero for team Europe at Celtic Manor, when he edged out Hunter Mahan but there was no such performance from the Irishman this time around.
Johnson was in a decent touch of his own and he was in no mood to let the Europeans have it easy in Chicago.
Right from the start, Johnson was in command of the match. He won three of the first four holes. McDowell pulled things back momentarily but Johnson was solid as ever.
The Irishman had the opportunity to put up some surprise on the 16th but he missed a fairly easy putt.
Meanwhile, Sergio Garcia and Jim Furyk contested a match which had everything. This match was meant to go right down the wire and so it did.
The Spaniard won the second hole, taking an early lead, but the veteran American levelled it up on the next hole. This was pretty much the story throughout the match until the 17th hole.
Furyk was in the lead going in to the 17th hole but Garcia was in full mood to avenge the defeat Furyk inflicted on him back in 1999.
Garcia won the 17th hole levelling things up. He then held his nerve to win the 18th and secured a vital point for his team.
"There's no doubt, there's no doubt that it's been part inspired by Seve but also mostly from our captain, José. What an amazing guy. What an unbelievable captain, no matter what the outcome will be. He's an unbelievable. He's one of the nicest guys
I've ever met, and you know, it's amazing," said Garcia, who defeated Furyk, 1-Up.
People had question marks over Lee Westwood’s form coming into the Ryder Cup but he responded to captains’ call brilliantly. His 3&2 victory against Matt Kuchar was crucial in securing the Ryder Cup for team Europe.
Westwood, overall, had an average tournament. He won two and lost two, securing two out of a possible four points against the Americans.
