Sergio Garcia set to make his return to competitive golf
Sergio Garcia is set to return to competitive golf after a two-month hiatus from the game. The 30-year-old Spaniard has committed to the Castello Masters beginning this Thursday 21 October in Spain.
His slide down the ranks
Garcia’s last professional event was in August at the PGA Championship held at Whistling Straits. Nowhere was Garcia’s disenchantment with competition more apparent then at this event where Garcia walked
off the 18th green having missed the cut but nonetheless smiling.
Garcia’s departure from tournament golf was brought on by a so-called lack of motivation and decrease in energy but many believe that the true cause of Garcia’s sudden departure was his break-up with Greg
Norman’s daughter Morgan Leigh. The couple broke up in March 2009 and since then Garcia has dropped from second in the world ranking to 68th.
Prior to his break from competition Garcia has commented numerous times on the ill-effects the break-up has had on his golf game. At last year’s British Open Garcia explained the connection between his
personal and professional life saying, “when I am not feeling happy on a golf course and not up for it, that is the way it is. You can’t do anything about it. I can’t do well.”
Well rested
Garcia explained that his break from competition was necessary because he “had lost the desire to play, and practicing had become an obligation.”
The Castello Masters, part of the European tour, will welcome Garcia back this week and is a logical starting point for Garcia’s return since the 7,111-yard course at Club de Campo del Mediterraneo is
situated in his hometown of Valencia. Also, Garcia has very fond memories of this event having won it two years ago.
Garcia does not only sound enthusiastic about his return but seems determined to reach his full potential saying, “I have set myself new goals. I hope to return gradually to where I should be and perform
to my full potential that is to be world No. 1.”
