Question:

Garden fences?

My garden fences are getting a bit knackered but I can't really afford to replace them all. Only about 3 of them are desperate for replacement, but it will look awful if some are new and some are really old.

Can you buy some kind of covering that you can put over the fence panels to hide them (like bamboo or something?), so that I can replace just the couple that are really bad, and that would be a cheaper alternative to buying all new panels?

If so, can you please direct me to a website as I'm struggling to find anything.

Other suggestions are also very welcome!

  1. Paint them all with a fence paint which will conceal the differences (from your side at least) and protect the remaining panels a bit longer. You can get some quite arty shades these days.

  2. Power wash your entire fence.give it a few days to dry. Then buy a good quality fence paint.Your fence should last quite a long time

  3. ronseal wood varnish

  4. Grow something on them that is a vine or support assisted. Tomatoes would do well but if weight is an issue then support then with stakes first. It is nice to have everything look good but the point is to keep from sharing ALL the fruits of your labor with Harry D. Critter. Some free fencing material would be all those wooden shipping pallets that are given away. Get the same sizes and put them together. Pallets are great for fence or for bins and for a great mulch pit. They are more often made from good long lasting hard woods and look nice painted. Use sky blue paint as a bug deterrent. Bugs see the blue and keep flying because this is the sky to them. When they see greens and browns they look to land. That's how a lot of bugs find your plants. Pallets are great for you animals also as they are strong but make sure no nails are present and try to determine if they have any chemical spills from shipping. Another idea to hide ugly fence is to hang plant baskets on them or throw some pastel paints on them of varied colors. Cheap white latex left over can be tinted in a rainbow of color cheaper than buying a lot of paint. Then of course you can do barn red milk paint by mixing old milk with iron filings and it doesn't get anymore "green" than red milk paint.
