I had planted some hostas, Roses last year in my garden in the front of the house and they were doing fine. This year they came back but are not as big as they were last year. Why is that? I also have a hydragna plant too last year it is a bit bigger then what i palnted but there is only one flower bud on it and has still haven't bloomed yet. Why is that....the dayilly in that garden is growing very well and lots of blooms....

  1. Generally speaking it could be any number of issues, the soil may need amending - I would add a good mulch and fertilizer. I would also check the pH and adjust accordingly.

Depending on the type of hosta, I've had them "die back" for lack of the real term but eventually re-establish themselves the 3rd/4th year. Basically, the mature root died but the offshoots have survived and just need time to mature.

The roses may also have a bug, may be over/under watered, etc. I know one year I had stunted a rose and it appeared to be because of Roundup blowover- didn't recover until the next year.  Its hard to say without really actually looking at things - but I would start with basics  (water, mulch, pH, etc) being careful to not overdo the fertilizers/chemicals and make things worse and hopefully they will snap out of it..
