Garden water barrel?

How do I stop the water that is saved in my water barrel off my roof getting a nasty smell before I use it to water the garden. The barrel is of wood construction and I think was once used for alcohol.

Use a large garden and leaf plastic garbage bag to line the barrel.

Keep goldfish in it.

I think a small amount of bleach should work.

i'd say 5 drops (1 ml) per gallon, and it should be plant safe.

Keep it covered so sunlight doesn't enter it.

Add a few drops of domestos or Jeyes, this will kill any nasties in there but will dissipate away before you need to use the water.
