Gareth Delve might move to Toulon – Rugby News Update
Gareth Delve, the 29-year-old Wales and Melbourne Rebels No.8 has admitted that he is in talks with the French club Toulon, but has not made a decision as yet.
Delve became the first Welshman to play in the Super Rugby series when he signed a two-year contract with the newly formed Melbourne Rebels team in 2010, making the switch from Gloucester. Speaking about Toulon, the No.8 said that he has been in touch with
the club but it is not done and dusted.
"I have been speaking to Toulon for a long time now and they are a fantastic club and seem to be getting even stronger," Delve told the BBC. "But at this point in time there is not too much I can say either way.”
He further added, "At this point there is just the one offer, but I am considering the options. I have been talking for a while to a few different clubs and it's a case of working out what will be the best situation for the next couple of years."
However, the Rebels are planning life without him and have signed Scott Higginbotham from the Queensland Reds, but Delve is not entirely committed to the Top 14 Orange side. He wants to make a decision after consulting his girlfriend and family, adding that
it will happen pretty soon.
Toulon is conducting their own recruiting besides courting Delve. They have already signed Wales prop Gethin Jenkins and former London Irish duo Nick Kennedy and Delon Armitage. They want to become a powerhouse in French rugby and are keen to add top class
players into their team.
Delve started his career with Bath, signing a contract in 2001. His impressive displays earned him his first international cap against Scotland at Millennium Stadium, on February 12, 2006. He made a switch to Gloucester in 2007 but he remained on the periphery
of the Wales team. After playing in the 2008 Six Nations, he remained out of the national team for a further two years.
He played his last international match against Italy at Millennium Stadium, on March 20, 2010. Till date he has played for Wales 11 times.
